Kundli matching: 36-guna Ashtakoot milan
Enter two births and get the full eight-koota score out of 36, each koota shown with both charts' attributes, plus nadi, bhakoot, gana and manglik dosha checks. Computed from the sidereal Moon positions, not from a name or a sun sign.
The eight kootas
Ashtakoot milan is the North Indian method of horoscope matching for marriage. Eight factors are scored from the two Moon positions, with weights from 1 to 8, for a maximum of 36 gunas.
| Koota | Points | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Spiritual compatibility by the rashi classes Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra. The groom equal or higher scores. |
| Vashya | 2 | Mutual influence by class of sign: human, quadruped, water, wild and insect. |
| Tara | 3 | Birth-star distance counted both ways in nines. Remainders 3, 5 and 7 lose the half. |
| Yoni | 4 | Instinctive compatibility by the 14 nakshatra animals. Hostile pairs score 0. |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Friendship between the two Moon-sign lords. Mutual friends 5, mutual enemies 0. |
| Gana | 6 | Temperament: deva, manushya, rakshasa. A manushya with a rakshasa scores 0. |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Distance between the two Moon signs. 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 counts are bhakoot dosha. |
| Nadi | 8 | Constitution: adi, madhya, antya. The same nadi is nadi dosha and scores 0. |
How to read the score
- Under 18: below a commonly used traditional threshold.
- 18 to under 25: the middle score band in this method.
- 25 to under 32: a higher score band.
- 32 to 36: the highest score band used here.
The total is a summary, not a verdict. Practitioners weigh the individual doshas: a 30 with nadi dosha is read more cautiously than a 24 without it.
The doshas
Nadi dosha flags the same nadi, which receives zero of eight points. Bhakoot dosha flags Moon signs 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 apart. Gana dosha flags a zero in the selected gana table. Traditions differ on exceptions and cancellation; these flags do not establish an adverse outcome.
The separate Manglik screen checks Mars in positions 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 or 12 from a stated reference. It compares both people from lagna when both are available, otherwise both from the Moon. The result reports shared-reference flags and their limits, without declaring cancellation or deciding whether a relationship should proceed.
Why this needs the Moon, not the Sun
All eight kootas are computed from the Moon: its rashi (varna, vashya, graha maitri, bhakoot) or nakshatra (tara, yoni, gana, nadi). Manglik is an additional screen outside the 36-point total. A Sun-sign compatibility page cannot calculate these factors. Unknown clocks use local noon with explicit uncertainty; a changed Moon sign or nakshatra can change the result.

Matching questions
How many gunas should match for marriage?
Some traditions use 18, 25 and 32 out of 36 as score thresholds. These are categories within a traditional method, not evidence that two people should marry. Read the individual kootas, input uncertainty and declared rules rather than treating the total as a decision.
Is kundli matching free on StarScore?
Yes. The eight-koota score and the additional Mars placement screen need no account. Birth inputs are not saved by the calculation API. Optional transfers to another calculator use temporary storage in your browser tab; downloaded results remain on your device.
What is nadi dosha and can it be cancelled?
Nadi dosha occurs when both Moons fall in the same nadi (adi, madhya or antya), costing all 8 nadi points. Classical exceptions include the same rashi with different nakshatras and the same nakshatra with different padas. StarScore flags the dosha; the exceptions need a human reading.
Do I need exact birth times for matching?
The 36-guna calculation uses the two Moons. With an unknown clock, local noon is an estimate and a changed Moon sign or nakshatra can change the score. A lagna-based Mars check also requires available natal angles. The result identifies its reference and limits.
What if both are manglik?
The comparison uses lagna for both people only when both lagnas are available; otherwise it compares both from the Moon. Shared flags are a limited traditional screen, not automatic cancellation or a conclusion about a relationship.
